Hiking Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore
Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore protects 15 miles of the southern shore of Lake Michigan. The 15,000 protected acres are less than an hour drive from Chicago.
There are more than 50 miles of trails that weave through diverse landscapes. Hikers can explore rugged dunes, sunny meadows, wetlands bursting with wildlife and wildflowers, dense forests or simply stroll along the scenic shores of Lake Michigan.
Indiana Dunes offers year-round outdoor recreation. In the spring wildflowers and abundant songbirds bring Indiana Dunes to life. During the summer watch for incredible sunsets along the lake and meandering wildlife. Also fisherman will enjoy the summer steelhead run and Portage Lakefront fishing pier offers lakeside fishing. The fall (and spring) bring thousands of migratory birds. In the winter you can expect peaceful solitude while you snowshoe or cross-country ski along trails.
