At 13,161 ft. Wheeler Peak is New Mexico's High Point. Wheeler Peak Trail is a tough long climb so make sure to get an early start. Always keep an eye out for afternoon thunderstorms that have a tendency to roll in. Once you reach the summit you will be treated with amazing views in all directions. No climbing gear is needed for this trek but it is a long one. Backpacking opportunities are available for those that want to stretch the trip out. World Class skiing is also available at Taos Ski Resort. Have fun knocking this high point off the bucket list and happening Hiking!

History

Wheeler Peak is named after George Montague Wheeler who explored and mapped the area west of the 100th meridian in the late 1800's. Wheeler Peak in Nevada's Great Basin National Park and Wheeler Peak in Colorado are also named in his honor. There is camping available in Carson National Forest.
