The Tolleston Dunes Trail is an easy family friendly hike in Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore a short drive from Chicago that features wonderful scenery. The trail weaves along 10,000 year-old sand dunes. The dunes were formed when Lake Michigan was 25 feet higher than it is right now. Tolleston Dunes are the second youngest of four distinct dune systems found within the national lakeshore. Along the trail hikers will catch glimpses of Lake Michigan from the dune ridges and pass through black oak savanna. This trail also provides habitat for the endangered Karner Blue Butterfly. This trail is dog friendly, but your furry friends must be on leash. Also this trail makes a great choice for a winter cross country skiing or snowshoeing. There is camping available in Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore.
