Sal Hollow Loop Trail is a great hike or backpacking trip that features amazing scenery and a chance to escape the crowds. There is a backcountry site available along the Sal Hollow Campsite Trail. Return to the trailhead via the Buffalo Creek Trail. This trail is also equestrian friendly. Mammoth Cave National Park protects the largest known cave system in the world. So far more than 400 miles of Mammoth Cave have been explored, that’s nearly double the next largest cave system. While the cave is certainly a highlight for most visitors, don't forget to explore what’s above the surface. Mammoth Cave National Park is home to more than 1,300 different species. To put that into perspective, Great Smoky Mountain National Park is famed for its biodiversity and has more than 1,500 different species. Mammoth Cave has nearly as much biodiversity and is one tenth of the size as GSMNP. The park is home to over 70 different threatened or endangered species. The park trails offer wonderful fall foliage, wildlife viewing and a chance to connect with nature. There is camping available in Mammoth Cave National Park.
