Paliku via Halemau'u Trail is a tough hike or backpacking trip in Haleakala National Park on Maui and is a short drive from Kahului. This trail starts at the Halemau'u Trailhead. The park says "the Halemau'u Trail begins here and leads through the shrubland to dramatic views at the valley rim before descending into the Wilderness Area. This is the launching point for many backpacking trips, with overnight parking available. Be sure you have the necessary permits before beginning any overnight adventure. A 2.2 mile (3.5km) round- trip hike takes you through the native shrubland to the rim of the erosional valley where the 1000 foot (305m) cliff drops away below you revealing the volcanic history of the mountain." Haleakala National Park has two campgrounds. The Hosmer Grove Campground is located in the Haleakala cloud belt at just about 7,000 ft, which can make for chilly nights. The Kipahulu campground is located near the Kipahulu Visitor Center.
