Notes

Ozark Trail Section in Taum Sauk Mountain State Park is one the best hikes in Missouri. The entire Taum Sauk Section of the Ozark Trail is 35 miles long and weaves through the heart of the St. Francois Mountains. Arguably the most scenic and popular section is 14.5 miles between Taum Sauk Mountain State Park and Johnson’s Shut-Ins State Park. This section is rugged and incredibly beautiful. The trail winds through a hardwood forest speckled with shortleaf pines. This hike also passes by Mina Sauk Falls, the tallest waterfall in Missouri. Soon after passing the falls hikers will arrive at Devil’s Tollgate, which is an 8 foot wide gap through 50 ft of volcanic rhyolite standing 30 feet high. Along the way make sure to follow the green and white “OT” blazes. This trail is dog friendly, so long as Lassie is on leash. Camping is available in Taum Sauk Mountain Park.
