Old Prison Mine Trail is a moderate hike in Frozen Head State Park near Knoxville, Tennessee. This is a great hike for those traveling with kids! This trail is dog friendly, so long as your furry kids are on leash. Frozen Head State Park is famous for its incredible displays of wildflowers, ample hiking opportunities and amazing bird watching. In fact, the Audubon Society has named Frozen Head an “Important Bird Area,” meaning it is essential habitat for birds. The park is named after Frozen Head Mountain (3,324 ft.), which appears snow capped during colder weather. There is camping available in Frozen Head State Park.


The park was once part of Cherokee hunting grounds. The area was ceded to the U.S. Government in 1805 with the Third Treaty of Tellico.
