The Eagle Scout Trail is a moderate family friendly hiking trail in Mines of Spain recreation area near Dubuque, Iowa. Park at the Cedar Ridge Trailhead, the trail starts at a junction on the Cedar Ridge Trail. Along the way hikers will pass through thick forest, prairie and cropland. Keep an eye peeled for wildlife and listen for songbirds along the way. This trail takes hikers through the remote parts of the southern end of the recreation area. Most of the trails in Mines of Spain can be connected for those looking for a longer hike. This trail is dog friendly, but you furry friend must be kept on leash. Watch out for poison ivy and if you are hiking in the summer you are going to want to make sure you have bug spray, mosquitos can be relentless. In the winter, Mines of Spain is great choice for snowshoeing or cross-country skiing and is favorite for bird watchers year-round. A heads up, Mines of Spain does NOT have a campground.
