The Mesquakie Trail is an easy family friendly hiking trail in Mines of Spain recreation area near Dubuque, Iowa. This scenic trail connects the E.B. Lyons Nature Center with the rest of the Mines of Spain. Park at the E.B. Lyons Nature Center and follow the Lead Mine Trail for a short distance until you reach the Mesquakie Trail junction. Along the way hikers will cross Granger Creek and meander along Catfish Creek. Most of the trails in Mines of Spain can be connected for those looking for a longer hike. This trail is dog friendly, but you furry friend must be kept on leash. Watch out for poison ivy and if you are hiking in the summer you are going to want to make sure you have bug spray, mosquitos can be relentless. In the winter, Mines of Spain is great choice for snowshoeing or cross-country skiing and is favorite for bird watchers year-round. A heads up, Mines of Spain does NOT have a campground.
