Loowit Trail in Mount St. Helens National Monument is a fantastic hike. The 34-mile loop circles Mount St. Helens and is perfect for a three or four day backpacking adventure. This hike is kid and dog friendly but may be a bit long for both. For those that don't have the time to do the entire thing don't fret, out and backs hikes are easy enough from the Loowit Trail numerous access points. This trial shows hikers the full spectrum of just how devastating the 1980 Mount St. Helens eruption was, especially on the northern side of the trail. Along the southern portion hikers are greeted with sections that were seemingly untouched by the eruption. There is plenty of camping available in Mt. St. Helens Volcanic National Monument .

History

The 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens released that same amount of energy as about 1,600 of the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima during WWII.
