The Lava Canyon Trail in Mount St. Helens National Monument is a wonderful hike that gives visitors an idea of the power of volcanic eruptions. This hike is kid and dog friendly. The first portion part of the hike is paved and is wheelchair accessible, however can be steep at times. The paved portion ends at an overlook that is sure to please with stunning canyon scenery and a waterfall. Those that choose to continue will head down a gorge along the Muddy River that was wiped clean by the 1980 Mt. St Helens Eruption. Pay close attention when hiking through canyon and try to make your college Intro to Geology Professor proud because this section is a real life lesson in the power of Mother Nature. There is plenty of camping available in Mt. St. Helens Volcanic National Monument .

History

In 1980, Mount St. Helens blew its lid and wiped the Muddy River gorge clean.
