On October 7, 1780 during the American Revolutionary War the Battle of Kings Mountain occurred in rural South Carolina. Thomas Jefferson called it the “the turn of the tide of success.” The decisive Patriot victory was the first after the British sacked Charleston in May of 1780. Roughly 900 Patriots including John Crockett, the father of legendary frontiersman Davy Crockett were outnumbered by Red Coats, but ultimately prevailed. Killing nearly 300 while only losing about 30 of their own men and capturing more than 650 British soldiers. The men fighting on the British side at Kings Mountain were born in America, but fighting for the United Kingdom. Today, hikers can follow in the footprints of those who fought for a nation of their own at Kings Mountain National Military Park.
