The Catfish Trail is an easy family friendly hiking trail in Mines of Spain recreation area near Dubuque, Iowa. Along this very scenic trail hikers can expect rugged rock outcroppings as they weave through white birch and river birch forest. As you enter the savanna area on the eastern portion watch out for Indian Burial Mounds and ancient oak trees. Most of the trails in Mines of Spain can be connected for those looking for a longer hike. This trail is dog friendly, but you furry friend must be kept on leash. Watch out for poison ivy and if you are hiking in the summer you are going to want to make sure you have bug spray, mosquitos can be relentless. In the winter, Mines of Spain is great choice for snowshoeing or cross-country skiing and is favorite for bird watchers year-round. A heads up, Mines of Spain does NOT have a campground.
