Broken Top Loop Trail is a moderate hike in Craters of the Moon National Monument near Twin Falls, Idaho. The monument says "the Broken Top Loop Trail is one of the most outstanding trails within Craters of the Moon. Along its 2-mile length you can observe nearly every type of volcanic feature characteristic of the basaltic eruptions that created this unearthly landscape. A wide variety of phenomenon such as bombs, lava tubes, pahoehoe, lava toes, pressure ridges, and cinder cones can be found along this trail." There is camping available in Craters of the Moon National Monument.

History

In the summer of 1969, Apollo 14 astronauts including Alan Shepard, Edgar Mitchell, Joe Engle, and Eugene Cernan trained in Craters of the Moon National Monument. They explored the lava landscape and learned the basics of volcanic geology in preparation for future trips to the moon.
