Simply walking for about 20 minutes gets you well past where most tourist turn around. The further out you adventure the whiter the salt becomes. Expect some pretty stunning scenery as well, the Black Mountains 6,000 feet right out of salt flat and Telescope shoots towards the sky at more than 11,000. Everyone knows Death Valley is hot, but this hike can be unbearable hot during the heat of the day, especially in the summer. Use common sense, take plenty of water and be sure to stay on the trail. There is camping available in Death Valley National Park.
