The Bowline Knot is a secure means of making a loop out of the end of one rope and is very popular among mountaineers. As with many knots, Its name has sailing roots. One of its most impressive features is that it maintains easy to untie even after a heavy load has been applied. Tying the bowline is as simple as remembering this little rhyme:
Make a tree (standing end) and a hole (loop)
The rabbit (working/bitter end of rope) comes up through the hole.
The rabbit runs around the tree.
And back down the hole!
